Instead I had to take the first job I could, as a low-earning court clerk. Now I’m nearly 40 just barely making ends meet and still owe more than $50,000 in student debt. I naively thought student loans would be the great equalizer. Instead I’ve plunged into a student debt nightmare.”

Ms. Lake is not alone. Nearly two million Canadians have student loans. That debt is worth about $20-billion and includes federal and provincial government loans and personal debt in the form of credit cards, family loans and lines of credit all used to finance post-secondary education. And that number is only set to grow as student loans owed to the government of Canada alone increase by $1.2-million a day. At the same time, the amount of unrecoverable student loan debt now sits at $149.5-million.

To be honest, I dislike how often discussions of racism get derailed to explain to people that the dictionary definition is out-of-date and inadequate but I feel it is a conversation we need to have. Racism will always be more complex than a “hatred or intolerance of another race or other races”. It is a set of practices and subconscious behaviors that continuously teaches us to default to white, where “nude” is considered to be beige, and black folks and Hispanics have higher incarceration rates than whites for the similar crimes. By saying this I am not undermining bullying you may have received in grade, middle or high school and I am also not saying people of color cannot be prejudiced against other races themselves. All I am saying is we, as people of color, cannot be racist since we lack the power to full on oppress you. It is truly that simple to grasp.

Prejudiced, then? Or ineffectually racist? Help a brother out, here.

Mama Drama

OH, SNAP! R. told you, A.! “There not so cute are they!!” might be my new favorite [sic] moment on the blog.

Normally I don’t post submissions that sound like they might involve teenage mothers because, well, they bum me out, but this submission was crying out to be posted. I think it’s actually an honest portrayal of what it’s like to be young and naive and think baby clothes are the smallest, cutest, most pastel-est things ever, so much so that you get knocked up and give birth to a real live baby. And then that baby poops all over itself and screams a lot and learns to walk and talk back. And suddenly you’re all, “Whoa, why the hell did I have a freaking baby?!!”

Forget sex education. Just hire A. and R. to speak at high schools about motherhood. That’ll encourage teens to “keep their legs closed!!!”.

TILL THE END by Emily Dickinson

I should not dare to leave my friend,
Because — because if he should die
While I was gone, and I — too late —
Should reach the heart that wanted me;

If I should disappoint the eyes
That hunted, hunted so, to see,
And could not bear to shut until
They “noticed” me — they noticed me;

If I should stab the patient faith
So sure I ‘d come — so sure I ‘d come,
It listening, listening, went to sleep
Telling my tardy name, —

My heart would wish it broke before,
Since breaking then, since breaking then,
Were useless as next morning’s sun,
Where midnight frosts had lain!

"The most important things are the hardest things to say. They are the things you get ashamed of, because words diminish them - words shrink things that seemed limitless when they were in your head to no more than living size when they’re brought out. But it’s more than that, isn’t it? The most important things lie too close to wherever your secret heart is buried, like landmarks to a treasure your enemies would love to steal away. And you may make revelations that cost you dearly only to have people look at you in a funny way, not understanding what you’ve said at all, or why you thought it was so important that you almost cried while you were saying it. That’s the worst, I think. When the secret stays locked within not for want of a teller, but for want of an understanding ear.”

- Stephen King

Carl Lewis for the New Jersey Senate.

Carl Lewis for the New Jersey Senate.
